Career Tip of the Week
Using local resources to advance your career
By: Gabe Hamda, Ph.D, SPHR
Introduction:
Using local resources is the simplest and cheapest way to advance your career. Why? The resources within your reach are easily identifiable and accessible. In this article, we will remind you how to access and use these resources for your advancement.
What are local resources? local resources are a combination of knowledge, connections, and technical assistance centers. These include: using what you know; using what your friends know; using what other people around you know; using what you can find from internet sources; using resources dedicated to your community; using resources available to the general community.
What is seeking career advancement? It is exploring immediate, near term and long term career opportunities. If any of the following questions fit your situation, you are seeking career advancement. Are you looking for a job? Are you seeking to secure a professional job? Do you want to change a career? Do you want to change industry? Are you preparing for a promotion? Are you seeking an immediate promotion. Yes, these and related questions are good indicators of seeking career advancement.
What are specific examples of local career resources? Key examples local career resources are: American job centers, Private staffing companies. Online job boards, Social media profile, Non profit employment centers such as Catholic Charities, Lutheran social services, and community centers.
What is the best way to navigate local resources?
- Decision to have a positive outlook such as expecting to succeed, having composure, a good sense of humor, a cheerful smile, demonstrating confidence and counting your blessings.
- Positively engage with technical assistance centers by understanding the inner workings of the center, making personal connections/building rapport, asking for suggestions and asking for assistance.
In closing, when seeking to advance your career by using local resources, make sure you expect success, be pleasant, have composure/patience, count your blessings and enjoy the journey.
